More and more countries are implementing carry-on restrictions. The new member countries are:
Australia and New Zealand (International travel) - from 31 March 2007
Japan - from 01 March 2007
I guess, it would be safe to assume that we can expect more countries to join this exclusive club whose main goal is to hassle air travelers.

As far as I know, in terms of international travel, Japan has had the restriction since the US instituted it late last year. The only problem is, unlike in the US where you can buy beverages that you can bring onboard once past security, in Japan you can't being any liquids on board PERIOD.
At all shops inside the airport once past security, when you buy a drink, they will pour it in a plastic cup for you and most vending machines are turned off. A bit harsh in my opinion...but as a Japanese business partner informed me, unlike in the US, once a regulation is passed like "no liquids on board", it's very difficult to then change it later like how it happened in the US.
In the end this wouldn't be such a bad thing if the flight you are on has decent drink service like Continental. But if you're flying Northwest where you get one drink service at the beginning and the rest are small shots of stale water for the remainder of the 13 hour flight? Torture.....
