
"Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport."
You'd have to be living under a rock for the past year if you do not know the above new requirement for travelers in and out of the United States.

Note that the new passports being issued are integrated with RFID chips. These chips contain the data that is written on your passport's front page, including a digital photo to enable biometric comparison.
Should you be concerned about identity theft, you'd be glad to know that the US government has taken the necessary measures to protect your passport from being skimmed.
