In China, spitting is tolerated and done by almost everyone you meet outside. Personally, it bothers me. When I had to work in Beijing for half a year 8 years ago, I was constantly watching where I step, avoiding every sign of spit. I also looked away and tried very hard not to cringe everytime I see and hear someone spit.
Should your business take you to Shanghai often, you'll be glad to know that a new rule is being implemented... Shanghai taxis will now be equipped with SPIT SACKS.
"The sacks will be distributed among taxi drivers free of charge at regular intervals, and will be attached to the riot plate that separates a driver from the passengers so that both can, if need be, spit into it."
Hmmm... come to think of it, you might want to AVOID taking a taxi the next time your business takes you to Shanghai.
