A Schengen visa greatly simplifies travel within Europe. With this unified visa system, one can travel within the member countries freely.
At present member countries include: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. All these countries except Norway and Iceland are European Union members.

Great news for those who have business dealings in Eastern Europe as borderless travel will soon expand to include Malta, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovakia and Slovenia; provided, of course, that these countries meet the stringent border security requirements.
In addition, Switzerland, a non-EU country, is set to join Schengen in 2007.
