When my brother-in-law first mentioned that he had a business trip scheduled for Algeria, his parents immediately advised him not to go. But, go he did. All everyone could do was to tell him to exercise extreme caution.
Thank God, the company he had meetings with and his own company did everything that was necessary to ensure his (and his 2 other colleagues') safety.
Nothing bad happened to him and his companions but the extremity of the security measures did scare them.
When we arrived at the airport, we were immediately escorted out. We boarded a car which was sandwiched between 4 other official cars with men carrying MPs.
And everytime we passed by another district (which was around every 20minutes during the whole 200km drive), our "protectors" had to stop the whole entourage and show all official documents (which were an inch thick) to every district official.
Wherever we went, we had bodyguards. The whole time we were in Algeria, we felt tensed and nervous. Why would there be a need for such extreme security measures if there was no threat?
I, personally, have never experienced travelling to a "hot" country where extreme security measures are needed. If I would be asked, I would probably say No. What about you? Would you risk it?
