"How safe is the safety deposit box?"
That is one of the first things that come to mind whenever I check into my hotel room. I prefer the digital key-in-your-number combination kind of lock and the heavy-duty, mounted body. I'd inspect it all around and decide then if it is secure enough for me to leave my valuables there.
Apparently, that is not the only thing that we, travellers, should ask ourselves. As pointed out by Mary Jo of Flyaway Cafe, "more and more hotels are adding on a fee for using the safe, which includes not only the use of the safe, but insurance in the event of a loss claim."
Since these hotels are charging fees, I wonder if there are changes in the liability limits, as well. Otherwise, they better make this "service" optional. I wouldn't pay extra on top of the hotel room rate++ for something which wouldn't be advantageous for me. Yes, even if it's just a dollar.

I'm with you, Melissa. I'd opt out of this extra charge!
