You and Your Business Cards

One of the most important things that we need to bring whenever we are travelling for business is our business card. Business cardS, to be exact.  We need to bring lots of them.

A business card is more than just a card with our name and the little details about where we work and how people can get in touch with us.  It is another way to present ourselves.  It is also a good way to network as it allows us to maximize chance meetings with people who could be a potential business partner.

And in other cultures, there are different ways to properly receive and give business cards.

  • In China, hold it with both hands when offering it.
  • In India, you need to use your right hand to give and receive business cards.
  • In Japan, you need to receive it with both hands and pretend to examine it, upon receipts.
  • In Korea, you need to put the card away as soon as you have received it.  When presenting your card, do so with both hands and nod your head gently.

Keep the above in mind and, as always, do your research about the business culture of a particular country before you fly to your meeting.

Ooooh yeah. Business card is LIFE in Japan and most of Asia. It's really interesting how, in the US, so few people, even execs, own a simple small business card holder. Nothing looks more unprofessional and gives a bad first impression when, at the start of a meeting, you pull out a loose stack of dog eared business cards from a ratty wallet or in your pocket and proceed to pass it around.

Though now I have a problem with remembering who's who and what to do with the 300+ business cards from Japan that I have collected over the years.... *sigh*....

I actually valued my business cards more when I started working for a Japanese company.

LOL on your collection of business cards. haha.

I remember one of my bosses who get miffed if his business cards are not in pristine condition and if the staff fails to order new ones when he runs out of them. Business cards are indeed very important in conducting business here in Asia.

Excellent post. Since you mentioned business cards, a nice resource is a company called Luna Concepts. They offer localized business cards in Japanese (and other languages) in a standard printed card format, Outline EPS (vector art) or Press-Ready PDF. You can choose to localize your current card, or create a single-sided or double-sided business cards from scratch.

Luna Concepts also has an informative FAQ section for answers to common business card localization questions.

It's worth checking out!
