With Airline Alliances (like One World, Star Alliance and Sky Team), more and more destinations are within easy reach. Another great advantage for frequent travellers is the ease of earning more mileage rewards.
Some have cited lower prices as another advantage. But, based on the bookings that I have had, that does not seem to be the case. Yes, prices are lower for some routes due to the decrease in operational cost. But, this means lower cost for the airlines in the alliance and not necessarily for the passengers.
Alliances mean that there is no competition for a few destinations. Which could mean that there are no price breaks or discounts available.
Another disadvantage (from the point of view of travellers) that I sometimes see is the code-sharing agreement which allows them to put passengers on another airline that belongs to the Alliance. The way I see it, if I book United, I expect the service and the facilities that United gives. I feel short changed when I am forced to fly on another airline; especially when the code-sharing flight's service is not comparable to the service which I expected to get for the price that I paid.
What about YOU? Do you see these as disadavantages or you don't really care what you get as long as you earn points?
