Laptop? Check.
Coffee? Check.
WiFi? Check.
It's the smell of coffee, the din of other patrons talking to each other, the casual atmosphere and the activity around that has this effect on me. I relax. And, surprisingly to some, I become productive.
So whenever on the road and I know that my taxi is nearing the hotel, I keep a lookout for possible hideouts if and when I get an afternoon (or even morning) free to work in this seemingly chaotic atmosphere which has quite the opposite effect on me.
I may be that laptop-toting, coffee-drinking business traveller in your neighborhood café but that does not mean that I do not observe the unspoken WiFi in public areas etiquette.
-
I do not download big files (email with attachments or, horror of horrors, videos). If I need to, I stay in my hotel room and work from there;
-
I do not stay online very long. It could become expensive, you know;
-
I make sure that I do not stay there for hours on end with only one purchase. I buy a drink every hour so as not to overstay my welcome.
What about you? Do you observe these unspoken "rules" whenever you are using public WiFi?
