While on the road, there were times when I have found myself alone and without any dinner plans. Rather than sequestering myself in the confines of my room, I have sometimes opted to boldly dine alone in a restaurant.
I did not really mind if I was sitting by my lonesome self, amidst tables full of couples and people in groups. I just sat there and enjoyed my food and drink.
Should you find yourself alone, venture out on your own. If you feel uncomfortable doing so, you can...
- bring your Blackberry or Palm and get a bit of your scheduling done while you wait for your food;
- bring a magazine;
- smoke. Have you ever noticed how occupied smokers look, even when alone and doing nothing else?;
- slowly sip your wine and people watch.
As a woman dining alone, I always refrain from smiling at random strangers. See, I'd rather avoid that uncomfortable "are you alone, may I (we) join you?" questions from those who may misunderstood my smile and my state of being alone.
Still not convinced? Get out of your power suit and high heels. Put those casual clothes on and head for the nearest fastfood. Or, get something to take away and walk around.
Or, well, if you just don't feel like going out, order room service.
Have YOU ever tried dining alone? What have you experienced? What did you do to keep you occupied?

Melissa, thanks for the ideas here which are good if you travel like I do often. I tend to smile at dinners though... and have met some wonderful business leaders who actually did ask to join me at dinner and who became wonderful business contacts over the years.... Just another angle:-) from another dinner table... I loved you ideas for enjoying that solo dinner -- which is a great time to reflect after a busy day!
