
This is not exactly a tip. More of a trivia, actually. Interesting, nonetheless.
Back in 1980, airlines were given the freedom to compete with each other on price when the Federal Government deregulated the industry. The only way to keep customers loyal was to offer the lowest fare. Over at American Airlines, Mr. Plaskett and his team had to think of a gimmick to keep their customers loyal, even if they weren’t offering the best prices. I can only assume that the other airlines were also brainstorming for ideas to keep their customers. American Airlines was was able to keep and win customers' loyalty. Thanks to Mr. Plankett's idea, based on his childhood memory. He remembered how he and his family back in Raytown, Mo. would lick S&H Green Stamps which were given by grocery stores as a reward for shopping there. As soon as the Plasketts had enough pasted on their book, they brought it back to the S&H redemption center and claimed a prize. The prizes weren’t grand but it kept the family loyal to that grocery store. Thus, from this thought, the idea of getting something for nothing came to be. May 1, 1981 – 25 years ago on Monday – AAdvantage was unveiled. It was the birth of the Frequent Flier miles. [source: NY Times]
