Let’s face it, many employees are guilty of violating company regulations. Hence, more and more companies are monitoring the use of office facilities (email, phone and/or internet) for inappropriate or non-business purposes. These may be legally right but companies still have to be careful when doing so in order not to infringe on employee’s privacy rights.
Another part of the business that some companies are considering to monitor (if not, already) is the policy for business travels.
The Employee Travel Monitoring System (ETMS), launched at the end of last year, claims to tackle some of the misdemeanours the Institute of Travel Management calls corporate delinquency, which is estimated to cost companies millions.
The package, designed by the Anvil Group, allows a security manager or head of department to open a website and see the location of all staff travelling abroad as well as check who is en route to a certain destination. It also keeps archive records and tracks the maximum number of employees allowed to travel together.

So, the next time you plan to take advantage of your business trip by turning it into a mini-vacation, do not hide it. There is nothing wrong with it if you do not charge the company for unwarranted personal expenses. Big Brother could be watching, you know.
