Cathay Pacific Review

Air Transport World Magazine – Airline of the Year 2006
Skytrax – Airline of the Year 2005

I am not surprised that Cathay Pacific has earned these accolades.

Cathay PacificIn the 90s, way before they opened Chek Lap Kok International Airport to replace the old Kai Tak Airport , Hong Kong was my main business hub.  Regularly commuting to this now former British colony was made possible and convenient by Cathay Pacific.

2006 and I still find myself booking Cathay Pacific flights whenever I have to fly to Hong Kong.  I am a member of both Asia Miles and Marco Polo and I do enjoy the benefits both let me enjoy. However, Cathay Pacific did not earn my loyalty because of these programs. Cathay has my loyalty because of their excellent service.  Whether online, on-board, phone support or from their ground service, they have yet to disappoint.  Yes, I have had a couple of less than perfect experiences but hey, their over-all performance throughout the years more than makes up for that.

ONBOARD

Business Class seats have a 9 degree recline angle and can be reclined fully. Even if you are 6’3” tall, you’ll fit right in and will be able to get a goodnight’s sleep. For someone who is 5’3”, like me, you can even have enough space to extend your arms fully over your head. Hehe

Meals alà haute cuisine can be expected, served in elegant glassware and crockery.  They even offer refreshment menu which allows you to order your meals to be served at your preferred times.  No need to wake up at odd hours (based on your body clock).

Urgent business need?  Each aircraft has telephone and fax services.

Bored?  Your Personal Television (even if you are seated in economy class!) gives you 20 different channels and 10 interactive games. Of course first and business class enjoy a bit more with Audio/Video on Demand. And since February of this year, passengers on first and business class have a wider selection with 50 movies and 100 TV shows available on demand.

And, of course, service from the staff is excellent. Their efficiency and friendliness made it to number 1 in my list; especially if I compare it to the "lack" of service and smile I always encounter whenever I fly Lufthansa. But, that is another story.

AT THE AIRPORT

You’ll never dread waiting long for your flight if you have to wait at Chek Lap Kok.   Cathay ’s airport lounge will definitely ensure that your stay is comfortable. You can get personal living spaces where you can work or read in peace, you can unwind at their restaurants, you can surf.  First Class lounge even has a luxurious bath where you can freshen up.

If you are planning to fly to Asia (particularly Hong Kong) any time soon, I suggest flying with Cathay Pacific.  I've never crossed so many time zones and yet still feel refreshed for the meeting soon after my arrival.  Thanks to Cathay Pacific.

What about you? Which airline made it to your number 1 list?
