One of the challenges of global business we have to face is the varying business culture. When visiting companies in a foreign land, it is always best to prepare one's self.
If you are planning to conduct business in Japan or with a Japanese company, it is important for you to understand their culturally-influenced protocols. Your success might depend on this.
- Men are advised to wear conservative suits. Women should dress conservatively, as well. Go easy on the make-up, perfume and jewelry. It is important in this culture to maintain a neat appearance. Hence, I always make sure that I bring my travel iron with me to make sure that my clothes aren't creased.
- Engage in small talk before you start with the official business. Expect questions about your family.
- No matter how friendly they are, do not presume that you can use their first names. Add Mr. or Mrs. or a -san to their surnames.
- When exchanging business cards, make sure that you use both hands to present yours. Examine (or, at least, pretend to) the business card given to you before you put it away.
- Gift-giving is part of their business protocol. Make sure that you bring something. Do not give something too valuable as they may think this is a bribe.
- Most importantly, be prepared with your presentation. Lack of preparation, planning and information will not bode well with your Japanese business associates.
